Rabbits

Firelight Heritage Farm has an assortment of rabbit breeds available on a limited basis. Please inquire as to availability.

Our rabbits are fed a diet of pellet, hay, and assorted greens. Our kits are given a variety of greens to produce fast growth and robust health. We feed mostly organic greens, many of them grown on our own micro-farm.

We selected specific breeds, and are engaged in a systematic breeding program, to produce better meat rabbits. We selected the following breeds, for the traits listed:

  • Flemish Giant - calm temperament (makes them easy to handle), and larger size.
  • Californian - top meat to bone ratio, and dressed weight to live weight ratios.
  • New Zealand - rapid growth and solid meat production.

We handle our breeders regularly, and we handle our prospective breeders regularly as well. We select breeding stock based on five general criteria:

  • Individual rabbit traits - any animals that are unduly aggressive, have undesirable traits, or exhibit undesirable behaviors on a consistent basis are culled from the breeding stock.
  • Litter Size - measured by the size of the litter at weaning.
  • 9 Week Weights - both live and dressed weights of fryers are measured, best live weights are retained for breeding.
  • 12 Week Weights - both live and dressed weights of roasters are measured, best live weights are retained for breeding.
  • Meat to bone and live to dressed ratios are considered for long term breeding planning.

We hope to produce a combination that results in better weights, good meat to bone ratios, and hardiness that suits it to being raised in difficult climates.
